I found out that if you turn on the auto pilot, "otto" wants to fly to the 0 or 360 on the Directional so I set my compass, get in the air to the heading I want, set the DI to 0 hit Otto and cruise. I can turn by moving the DI off 0 left or right and can climb without having to Iron Hand it too. Mode 22 is just level flight with no control, IE bomb run..or Beer run, one or the other.

Found this today on ATAG from Drock,
Same as I figured out but good tip. One other is if you jump to your rear gunner don't jump back to the pilot seat because the AI see's you in the last two seats. So jump up front then to the pilot seat so the AI will man the gun. You can see this in the on line stats. It will show you as the pilot, then you jump in the gunner and back to the pilot it will show you as pilot, gunner. You want it to show you as pilot, bombardier so your AI will shoot.

And I found out something else, for those less adept like myself, when the AC is stable and flying right, the compass "T", always points north. Just so, and just in case, you do have a reference as to your general direction and heading.
I do need to learn "how to use" the gyro and auto-pilot, but for an old "fly by your seats" and a "dead reconing" and "landmark following " type of guy, the fact that the compass DOES point north, is a big help.
On with the lesson. BTW, I am programming the buttons needed to set the gyro and auto-pilot, so I can operate it.

I'll tell you my short cut. I line up on the runway to take off, set the CS to the heading I want, set DI to 0 ,take off steer the "T" to my heading, adjust DI to 0 and toggle auto. Then I can trim for a climb or level and enjoy the sights. Then land in occupied France for Brats, sauerkraut and beer! In my defence I didn't set the CS to the 300 heading needed so that messed me up.
