Hey Bnashee.
EDIT: This is a good one, and in my estimation should be tried right after removing any left-over devices from "Device Manager " using the "devmgr.bat" file we made,, and then rebooting.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:I have uninstalled and reinstalled Epson Scan but still see the message "Epson scan cannot be started" when
launching the software in Windows 7 or Windows Vista. What should I do?
A: Follow these steps:
Turn off the printer.
Uninstall Epson Scan.
Restart your computer.
Open Windows Explorer (right-click , then select Explore or Open Windows Explorer).
Navigate to C:\Windows.
Locate the twain_32 folder and rename it to a different name such as twain_32_old.
Restart your computer.
Reinstall Epson Scan.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the support page, with the drivers and software for your scanner.
For the time being, also download and read at least the "Start Here" document and you might as well glance through some of the others too.

You are going to need to uninstall the software before you try to install it again. And this may sound weird, but if you have NOT installed the software yet, just the failed driver install, then go ahead and install the software for your scanner, then uninstall it, then reboot.
This is one way to make sure that the un-install finds and removes all of the parts (drivers etc . ) that may have been installed incorrectly ...... remembering to reboot and then run that devmgr.bat file to MAKE SURE that the device is NOT there at all.
Here is an excerpt from the official support page description of the uninstall process for Windows Vista
Uninstalling Epson Scan for Windows Vista
Note: You need an administrator account and password if you log on as a standard user.
Turn off the scanner.
Disconnect the scanner’s interface cable from your computer.
Click the start button icon and select Control Panel.
Click Uninstall a program from the Programs category.
Select EPSON Scan from the list.
Click Uninstall/Change, then click Continue in the User Account Control window.
Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall Epson Scan.
In some cases, a message may appear to prompt you to restart the computer. If so, make sure I want to restart my computer now is selected and click Finish.
Then .... install the software, remembering to NOT Plug in the scanner until the software is installed.
I am looking for more info, and will update this post or thread as I find more pertinent stuff. (yeah, the official word for techies around the globe )
Will do what I can to help resolve the issue.
