This is a part of a reply to a friend, after his XP box blew up a few days ago. As soon as he mentioned it was XP giving him problems, I sent him this information.
I even told BlackWolf about this issue a day or so after it happened, and I should have sent out an emergency email to everyone that I know, but by the time I found out about it, it was already too late,
As it turns out, my reply to him fits here perfectly. Not using any part that is of a personal nature, but here is the peritinent info.

if you are running XP, do not use Microsoft Securities Essentials. An update killed "millions" of XP installs a week or so ago. Everyone updated, and booom. XP was dead. I would not put it past Microsoft to blow up the installs on purpose, creating new customers from old. And alot of people have been saying the same thing.

If you have a backup from say 2 or 3 weeks ago, use it, but disconnect from the internet before doing so. Un-install secutiry essentials completely, and then plug it back in to the internet. You do not have to take my word about it, there are literally thousands of articles and post about this.
As a matter of fact, I would not even do an auto-update, There are plenty of sites to download and manually update.

And the advice is good advice if you need, or just want to, continue using XP. I only moved to Win 7 last year, because my XP was so stable after years of tweaking. The only reason I switched was that I needed DX 10.
Edit: There are literally thousands of post out there on the internet already, trying to say that Security Essentials is not the cause of these problems, anyone that tells you that is a lying propagandist for MicrCrap.
MS and other corporations, literally spend $Millions/ every year on PR, to companies like reputations.com whose sole responsibility is to "Lie through their teeth" on the internet, trying to squash true stories, damn the facts or the truth. Do not buy a word of it.
